Barriers to Higher Education for Hispanic Students in Arkansas
Arkansas has one of the fastest-growing Hispanic populations in the nation, yet Hispanic—including undocumented—students in Central Arkansas continue to face significant barriers to accessing higher education.
This study examines the challenges experienced by low-income and first-generation Hispanic students, highlighting persistent systemic inequities, financial constraints, and limited access to support. Using a mixed-methods approach that included interviews, focus groups, and surveys with Hispanic high school students, college students, and parents participating in the Mamás Unidas LR programming, the study identifies financial barriers and lack of institutional and familial support as the primary obstacles to postsecondary access. Findings also highlight opportunities and resources that may better support Hispanic students and families in navigating the path to higher education.
This study was conducted as a practicum project by Clinton School of Public Service students Oladotun Awosusi, Enrique Carbone, Terri Thomas, Eric Brown, and Chelsea Fuston.
